The unrest in the Wallo zone of the Oromia region, specifically in the Jiille Dhummuugga district, continues to escalate. According to local sources, forces of the Prosperity Party (PP), the ruling political party, are allegedly extorting money from locals under the pretext of military contributions. These reported incidents, which began on August 21, 2025, have incited fear and resentment amongst the residents. The PP forces are reportedly demanding payments of 5,000-6,000 birr from each household, fueling the growing tension in the region. The residents claim to be subjected to various forms of political and economic oppression. The political climate in the region has been volatile since the rise to power of Colonel Abiy Ahmed, the leader of the PP. The locals believe that the party is using its power to suppress dissent and control resources. This has led to a general sense of insecurity and fear among the Oromo people, the largest nation in the Ethiopian empire.
Alleged Violations of Human Rights
Local sources have also reported alleged human rights violations by PP forces. Those who fail to meet the extortion demands are reportedly subjected to various forms of punishment, including imprisonment and physical abuse. The Oromo Liberation Army (OLA), a the liberation force in the region, has been at loggerheads with the PP forces. The OLA, however, denies any involvement in the ongoing unrest. Many Oromo people have reportedly been imprisoned and tortured under the pretext of being associated with the OLA, further exacerbating the human rights situation in the region. Similar incidents have been reported in the West Shewa Zone, specifically in the districts of Metta Robi and Jaldu. According to local sources, forces of the PP have been implicated in acts of violence in these areas since August 16, 2025. The people in Jaldu district are reported to be living in fear due to the rising tensions. The situation has reportedly escalated to the point where ordinary residents are being caught in the crossfire. Civilians, including children and the elderly who are unable to flee, have been trapped in the conflict zone. They are reported to be living under dire conditions, with access to basic necessities such as food and water being severely restricted.

The situation in the Wallo is a stark reminder of the complexities of the political landscape in Ethiopia.
