Reports of Intimidation, Financial Exploitation, and Detentions by Prosperity Party Forces Emerge Amid Escalating Conflict

Reports of intimidation, financial exploitation, and detentions allegedly committed by forces of Ethiopia's ruling Prosperity Party (PP) have emerged from the West Walaga and Iluu Abbaa Booraa zones in the Oromia region. These incidents, primarily targeting local residents, have raised serious concerns about human rights violations and the escalating tensions between the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) and the PP forces.

Intimidation and Financial Exploitation in West Walaga

In the city of Naqamtee, East Walaga, local residents have reported living under a climate of fear and uncertainty due to the actions of the PP forces. On August 16, 2025, PP officials in Naqamtee's 07 district allegedly carried out an operation under the pretext of a registration exercise for a television service named Gibira TV. Residents were reportedly coerced into paying 400 Birr each, a substantial amount for many households in the region. Furthermore, truck drivers in Naqamtee have also reported facing financial exploitation. Local sources reported that drivers were forced to pay an additional 300 Birr fee at the local police station in the 07 district, without any clear justification for the additional charge. These incidents, allegedly carried out by PP forces, contribute to a climate of fear and uncertainty, causing significant distress and economic strain among the local populace.

Unsettling Developments in Iluu Abbaa Booraa

In the Iluu Abbaa Booraa zone, similar patterns of intimidation and financial exploitation have been reported. On August 16, 2025, the PP forces were accused of committing acts of violence and intimidation against local residents, allegedly identified as supporters of the OLA or "children of the liberation struggle." Numerous incidents of individuals being detained under the pretext of their alleged affiliation with the OLA and subjected to physical abuse and psychological torment have been reported. Additionally, reports have emerged of economic coercion, with one individual in the district of Daarimuu allegedly fined an exorbitant sum of six million Birr, equivalent to approximately $140,000 USD, under the guise of a "loyalty penalty."

Context of the Ongoing Conflict

These incidents reflect the escalating tensions between the OLA and the PP forces in the Oromia region. The OLA, a political and military organization, is committed to the liberation of the Oromo people and their struggle for self-determination. On the other hand, the PP, the ruling party in Ethiopia, has been accused of employing heavy-handed tactics to suppress opposition and maintain control over various regions, including Oromia. While the OLA has not reported any casualties on their side, the presence of the PP forces in the region has inevitably led to confrontations. The victims of these alleged rights violations are primarily ordinary civilians caught in the crossfire of this ongoing conflict.

The Need for Accountability and Justice

These allegations underscore the urgent need for a thorough and impartial investigation into these incidents to ensure accountability and justice for the victims. The path towards a democratic, inclusive, and prosperous Ethiopia must involve a concerted effort to safeguard human rights and uphold the rule of law. As Ethiopia navigates its complex political terrain, the wellbeing of its citizens and the protection of their rights should remain a priority for all parties involved. Transparent, accurate, and unbiased reporting in times of conflict is crucial to shed light on these issues and to ensure that the voices of the most vulnerable are heard.
