Rising Violence and Civilian Casualties in Arsii Nageellee

In the southern part of Oromia, an escalation of violence in the West Arsii Zone was reported by local sources on August 16, 2025. The conflict, centered in the village of Bobbaasoo Reejii in the Arsii Nageellee district, has led to an increase in civilian casualties due to gunfire and mortar attacks. Unidentified forces, suspected to be associated with the Prosperity Party (PP), are believed to have launched an extensive assault on the residents of the village. These attacks reportedly occurred near a local school, causing panic among the population. Four civilians were reported killed, with several others injured. The injured were immediately taken to a local health facility for emergency treatment. Unconfirmed reports suggest that the attackers targeted individuals suspected of having affiliations with the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA). However, the OLA has not confirmed any casualties on their side, maintaining their policy of not disclosing their losses.

Detention of Suspected OLA  Affiliates Raises Concerns

Our sources reported the detention of individuals suspected to have ties with the OLA following the attacks. These detainees were reportedly taken to an undisclosed location. The number of individuals detained, their current condition, and the charges against them remain unclear. This has raised concerns over potential human rights violations, especially regarding the due process and fair treatment of detainees.

Local Communities Bear the Brunt of the Conflict

The recent escalation of violence in the Arsii Nageellee district has profoundly impacted local communities, causing not only loss of lives but also instilling fear among the residents, disrupting their daily activities and livelihoods. As the situation continues to escalate, the need for a peaceful resolution becomes increasingly crucial; however, ongoing tensions between the PP and the OLA have hindered efforts towards dialogue and reconciliation.

Human Rights Violations and Unrest in South West Shaggar

In recent political developments, the South West Shaggar zone has been the stage for alleged human rights abuses and violence. Between the 13th and 16th of August, 2025, incidents involving the PP forces' alleged intimidation and detention of the local community in the Bachoo district, specifically in the Sooddoo Liiban village, were reported. The local sources provided details of the reported abuses, which included confiscation of property and physical violence. Several individuals were also reportedly detained, and their circumstances remain unclear. There has been no official statement from the PP forces regarding these allegations. The ongoing conflict and the alleged human rights abuses have created a climate of fear and uncertainty among the local community.

The Need for Accountability and Dialogue

These alleged human rights abuses highlight the urgent need for a thorough and impartial investigation into the incidents to ensure accountability for any abuses committed and to address the underlying issues fueling the conflict. The escalating violence and human rights violations, if left unaddressed, could further destabilize the region and exacerbate the suffering of the local communities. The situation in South West Shaggar and Arsii Nageellee underscores the ongoing challenges in ensuring human rights and political stability in the region. It emphasizes the importance of dialogue, accountability, and respect for human rights in addressing these challenges. As the conflict continues to unfold, the international community and local stakeholders must work together to promote peace, justice, and respect for human rights in the region.
