In the Haru district, West Wallaga, serious allegations of human rights abuses have been raised against the Prosperity Party (PP), known locally as Bilxiginna. The events reportedly took place on July 10, 2025, in the village of Conge, situated in the district of Haru, Western Oromia. Our local sources reported on July 12, 2025, that several civilians were detained by the PP forces allegedly under the command of Colonel Abiy Ahmed. Four individuals, namely Tasfaaye Ittafaa, Bodana Tasfaaye, Siisaye Taaddasa, and Caltu Taddasa were reportedly forcibly removed from their homes and taken to the local administrative office without due process. This act of detainment raises grave concerns about the respect for the rule of law in the region. The reasons for their detainment remain unclear, and their current status is unknown, adding to the growing apprehension about the actions of the PP forces in the region. These allegations are part of a broader pattern of reported human rights abuses in the region. Over several months, there have been numerous reports of violence and intimidation, allegedly carried out by PP forces. The actions appear to be targeted towards individuals who are perceived to be in opposition to the government's political agenda. The Oromo Liberation Army (OLA), known locally as WBO, has condemned these actions, citing them as evidence of the ongoing suppression of political dissent in the region. These claims, however, have been met with resistance from the government, which has repeatedly denied any involvement in human rights abuses. The escalating unrest in Western Oromia raises serious questions about the state of human rights in the region. As the situation continues to evolve, it is crucial that all parties involved respect the principles of human rights and the rule of law. The international community must also play its part in ensuring that these principles are upheld, and that any allegations of human rights abuses are thoroughly investigated. The region of West Shaggar, specifically in the district of Abuuna Gindabar, has recently been the epicenter of escalating tensions and human rights concerns. On July 12, 2025, local sources reported that forces affiliated with the Prosperity Party allegedly committed acts of violence against a 12th-grade student, Abdii Misgaanuu Barii, under the premise of him being a "member of the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA)." Despite the absence of concrete evidence, Barii was subjected to a brutal attack that left him in a critical condition. Approximately a month prior to this incident, in the Wine Rogge area, several farmers and political activists were reportedly arrested without sufficient reason or evidence, and were subjected to harsh treatment in police custody. The arrested individuals were not involved in any political activities, making their arrest and subsequent treatment a clear violation of their basic human rights. Reports suggest that 32 villages in the zone have been subjected to apparent acts of aggression by the Prosperity Party forces. The Oromo community in these villages reportedly live in a state of fear and uncertainty, with their human rights being violated on a regular basis. The ongoing situation in West Shaggar is a cause for concern as it highlights the increasing human rights violations and political tensions in the region. The incidents involving Abdii Misgaanuu Barii and the detained individuals from Wine Rogge serve as stark reminders of the urgent need for a resolution to the ongoing conflict and the protection of human rights in the region. As the complexities and challenges faced by communities in Ethiopia's diverse political landscape continue to unfold, the basic human rights of individuals must be respected and protected at all times, regardless of their political affiliations or beliefs. Any actions that infringe upon these rights should be met with swift and decisive action. As we continue to monitor the situation in Western Oromia, we remain committed to providing accurate and timely information, contributing to the protection and promotion of human rights in the region.
