Rising Tensions in Arsii Bahaa: Casualties and Arrests Amid OLA and Prosperity Party Clashes The eastern district of Arsii Bahaa in the Oromia region of Ethiopia witnessed escalating tensions on June 17, 2025, according to local sources.
FNN sources report that the conflict involved members of the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) and forces associated with the Prosperity Party (PP). The Siree sub-district of East Arsi located in the eastern part of Oromia, became a hotbed of violence as the OLA launched an attack on PP forces. The clash reportedly led to the death of six individuals and the arrest of fifteen others. Those detained were allegedly taken into custody under the directive of Colonel Abiy Ahmed. Simultaneously, in the southern and eastern zones of Oromia, OLA members reportedly attacked PP forces positioned in the Moltole area of the Sire district, near Qorke. This subsequent attack heightened the situation, leading to additional casualties and arrests. The Oromo people, a significant demographic within Ethiopia, have long been engaged in a struggle for political autonomy. The OLA has been at the forefront of this fight, frequently clashing with government forces. These continued conflicts between the OLA and PP forces in Oromia have raised significant concerns among human rights advocates. The Oromo people contend that the party's policies have not sufficiently addressed the Oromo people's demands for more significant representation and autonomy. The recent incidents in East Arsi and Sire underscore the volatile political climate in Oromia. As the tensions escalate, the Oromo community is increasingly calling for a resolution that respects their rights and demands. International observers closely monitor the situation in Oromia, expressing concern over the potential for the ongoing conflict to lead to further human rights abuses and political instability. As a result, there are growing calls for dialogue and negotiation to address the complex political issues. Despite the circumstances, the Oromo community remains resilient, with many expressing their determination to continue their struggle for political autonomy and human rights.
