In a worrying development from Oromia, local sources have reported a series of arrests and human rights abuses in various zones of the Oromia state over the last few days. On June 12, 2025, in the East Wallaga zone of Oromia, Guto Gidda district, our local sources reported that Prosperity Party (PP) military forces had rounded up and arrested civilians. The operation was reportedly carried out in the village of Fayisa in the Didibbe district. According to the sources, a man named Shonee Bayisa was arrested during a midnight raid on his home. These sources also reported that the PP forces have been carrying out a series of similar arrests across Oromia, targeting Oromo activists and relatives of Oromo Liberation Army. In the North Shaggar zone, Giraar Jarso district, an 80-year-old man, Warqu Beka Badhane and his two sons Dirriba Warqu and Buzuna Warqu, were reportedly arrested on the same day, June 12, 2025. The sources stated that the arrestees had been working on their farm when they were apprehended. They are now being held at the Girar Jarso police station, under conditions that are yet to be ascertained. The arrest of such elders and their family members has caused great concern among the local community. In another incident, on June 12, 2025, in the West Wallaga zone, Haru district, a school teacher was reportedly arrested by the Prosperity Party's forces. The detained teacher, Damuse Dilbi, had been teaching at a local secondary school in the Haru town before his arrest. Reports suggest that the teacher's arrest is part of a larger trend of targeting educators, students, and individuals involved in the educational sector, which has been intensifying in Oromia over the past few months. The incidents in East Wallaga, North Shaggar, and West Wallaga zones point to a worrying trend of increasing arrests and human rights abuses by the PP forces in Oromia. The targeting of civilians, including elders and educators, raises serious concerns about the deteriorating human rights situation in the region. The international community, including human rights organizations, is urged to pay attention to these growing reports of human rights abuses in Oromia and call for accountability for these alleged violations. The safety and security of civilians, particularly vulnerable groups such as the elderly and educators, must be ensured in all circumstances. FNN will continue to follow these developments and report on updates as they emerge.
