Detentions, Torture, and Intimidation Mark a Disturbing Trend
In the Oromia region, a series of alarming incidents involving the Prosperity Party (PP) forces have stirred widespread human rights concerns. Our local sources report a pattern of escalating abuses, including unlawful detentions, torture, and intimidation tactics, primarily in Roobee, East Arsi Zone and West Hararge, Ciro.
Unlawful Detentions and Harassment in Roobee, East Arsi Zone
Reports emerged from Roobee, a district in the East Arsi Zone, on October 24, 2025, indicating that PP forces detained numerous residents from Qillisaa Dambalii village. Among the detainees were individuals of varying ages, who were subsequently subjected to inhumane conditions in a detention center located in the town of Hindatoo. The conditions of confinement were described as deplorable, with detainees suffering from overcrowding and limited access to basic necessities. Notably, Seefuu Sheek Amaan, along with several others, has reportedly been held in detention for over a year without trial or charges, raising serious concerns about due process and respect for human rights. In addition to these detentions, the local community has faced other forms of harassment and intimidation, including the confiscation of farming equipment and other means of livelihood. Such actions can have devastating effects on the local economy and food security.
Torture and Exploitation in West Hararge, Ciro Meanwhile, in West Hararge, Ciro, on the same day, Angatu Ali, a local resident and respected community figure, was allegedly detained and tortured by PP forces. Following his detention, a ransom of 10,000 Birr was demanded for his release. Despite payment of the ransom, Ali remains in detention, fuelling outrage and accusations of financial exploitation by the PP forces.
An Alarming Pattern of Abuse
These recent events in Roobee and West Hararge are part of a larger pattern of alleged human rights abuses in the Oromia region. Over the past few years, there have been growing concerns about the treatment of the Oromo people, who make up a significant proportion of the Ethiopian population. The incidents serve as a stark reminder of the ongoing conflict in Ethiopia, particularly in the Oromia region. Despite the government's assurances to the international community of its commitment to peace and stability, these reports suggest a different reality on the ground.
A Call to Action
As a media outlet, we urge the relevant authorities to address these allegations in a transparent and timely manner, ensuring justice for the victims and accountability for those responsible. We also call on the international community to pay close attention to the situation in Ethiopia, particularly in the Oromia region, and to use all available mechanisms to ensure respect for human rights and the rule of law. As we continue to report on these developments, we remain committed to providing a platform for those whose voices are often silenced or overlooked. We believe that an informed public is a crucial part of any democratic society, and we will continue to strive for accuracy, fairness, and integrity in our reporting.
