Escalating Violence in Wollo Zone of Oromia: Young Oromo Woman Seriously Injured in Presumed Amhara Insurgent Attack
Rising Tensions in Harxuma Furse District
In a series of increasing violent incidents in the Harxuma Furse district, located in the Wollo zone, a young Oromo woman was gravely injured in what is believed to be an assault by Amhara insurgents. The incident occurred in the late hours of September 28, as conveyed by our local sources. Saada Mahammad Ahimade, the victim, sustained severe injuries in the Giraar area during what is understood to be a cattle raid by armed groups, suspected to be associated with the Amhara extremist militia, Fano. Ahimade is presently undergoing emergency medical attention at a local hospital following a gunshot wound. Eyewitnesses from the neighboring village of Dido reported that the attackers initiated gunfire at local herdsmen while attempting to seize their livestock. The community members promptly mobilized themselves, managing to rescue the injured woman, repel the attackers, and retrieve the stolen cattle.
Amplifying Pattern of Violence
The attack is the most recent in a string of alarming violent occurrences reported throughout the Harxuma Furse district. Local sources claim that the area has become a battleground for recurring invasions by heavily armed Fano militants, who are accused of instigating a terror campaign against Oromo civilians. There are widespread allegations that these insurgents receive direct backing from state authorities, including federal forces under Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's rule. The district governor is also reportedly involved in this purported collusion. These claims are derived from multiple reports suggesting that the Fano militias are provided with arms and logistical support from these sources.
Human Rights Concerns
Recorded abuses in the region encompass summary executions, attacks on civilians, large-scale cattle theft, property looting, and forced displacement of farming and pastoralist communities from their lands. Consistent eyewitness accounts describe methodical looting and widespread displacement, resulting in ruined livelihoods and impoverished families. Despite repeated calls for intervention from the federal government and regional authorities, the violence remains uncontrolled.
