In the Oromia region, a series of incidents involving extrajudicial executions, alleged human rights violations, land allocation disputes, and food shortages are aggravating existing tensions. Local sources have reported these developments, shedding light on the intensifying situation in different parts of the region.

The authorities denied proper burial according to our sources. Our local sources report this is a frequent event and has become a pattern.

Detention of Oromo Farmers in Mattu Sparks Outrage

On July 12, 2025, in Mattu district, part of the Ilu Abba Bora Zone, local farmers Damee and Abdii were reportedly detained by the Prosperity Party security forces. The two farmers were involved in a land reclamation project under the Waldaa Araaraa (Reconciliation Council) and were taken into custody one week after the commencement of their work in the rural area of Gandose. The PP forces allegedly accused the farmers of supporting the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA), claiming to have found weapons on their land. These allegations have been vehemently denied by local sources, insisting that the farmers were solely focused on their land reclamation work and were not involved in any political activities. The detention of the farmers without substantial evidence has led to widespread concern and condemnation within the local Oromo communities. The situation has stoked fears of further crackdowns on the Oromo people under the pretext of rooting out OLA supporters. The Oromo community is now calling for the immediate release of the detained farmers.

Land Allocation Disputes in Ambo City

Meanwhile, in Ambo city, located in the West Shaggar Zone, a land allocation dispute is escalating. In mid-July 2025, the PP cabinet announced plans to allocate land to local teachers and long-term residents. However, the decision was met with opposition from some quarters, leading to weeks-long standoffs. On July 10, 2025, when the teachers sought clarification over the land allocation, the PP cabinet announced a delay in the allocation until October, exacerbating the discontent. The perceived breach of trust and potential infringement on their rights by the PP cabinet has led to widespread dissatisfaction among the teachers and residents. Critics argue that the PP cabinet's approach to land allocation lacks transparency and is flawed. As the situation continues to escalate, the need for a fair and transparent resolution becomes increasingly evident.

Food Shortages Amid Political Tensions in Harxumma Furse, Wallo zone, North Oromia

In the Harxumma Fursee in Wallo, Northern Oromia region, locals are experiencing food shortages due to ongoing political tensions. On July 12, 2025, local sources reported that crops were being destroyed by individuals allegedly associated with the Prosperity Party accusing that the crops are being used Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) as hiding places. The local community claims that their crops have been destroyed by PP members who said the people can only cultivate teff, leaving them on the brink of starvation. The farmers, who depend heavily on their crops for their livelihood, now face severe food shortages and assert that their fundamental human right to food is being violated. The Oromia region has been a hotbed of political tension and conflict for some time now. The current situation in Harxumma Furse highlights the adverse effects of the ongoing conflict on local communities. The residents find themselves caught between the ongoing conflict and the struggle to survive amidst dwindling food supplies. They are now appealing to relevant authorities and international human rights bodies to intervene and address the situation before it spirals into a full-blown humanitarian disaster. These incidents present a stark reminder of the ongoing human rights issues and the dire consequences of political unrest on local communities in the Oromia region. As the situation continues to unfold, the communities remain hopeful for peaceful resolutions and an end to the undue harassment of their people.

Forced Deportations in Affar Region

The escalating political tension in the Affar region of Ethiopia has seen a surge in human rights abuses, with local sources reporting the forced deportation of 41 local residents to Eritrea in July, 2025. These individuals were reportedly targeted due to their perceived political affiliations and were forcibly removed from their homes by the regional government forces. The forced deportation of Affar residents into Eritrea is believed to be part of a larger political agenda by the regional government. This political strategy has resulted in a significant increase in human rights abuses within the region. The regional governor, Haji Ibraahim, has reportedly been facilitating these forced deportations to Eritrea. In response to these allegations, the president of the Affar region, Awwal Arbaa, and the head of the regional security and intelligence bureau, Gadduu Amaloo, have reportedly initiated an investigation into the matter. The ongoing political instability and violence in the Affar region have been exacerbated by the military intervention of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. The regional government's use of force and intimidation against the local population has further deepened the political crisis in the region. In conclusion, the alarming rise in human rights concerns in various regions of Oromia, including the incarceration of agricultural workers in Ilu Abba Bora, the resource deprivation in Wallo, and the forced deportations in the Affar region, underscore the urgency for international attention and intervention. The escalating political tensions coupled with these human rights abuses call for a comprehensive approach to ensure the protection of the local populations and the upholding of justice and the rule of law.
