BREAKING NEWS: HUMAN RIGHTS CRISIS IN WEST WALLAGGA June 10, 2025 - Reports of state-sanctioned violence are escalating in West Wallagga Zone, Oromia, as forces aligned with the ruling Prosperity Party (PP) stand accused of executing civilians and looting livestock. Oromia National Media–Arrata Biyyoolessa Oromiyaa (ONM-ABO) reported on June 8, that local militia allegedly executed a 74-year-old Oromo elder, Obbo Abraahim Imaanaa on June 6, accusing him of links with the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA), despite his lack of political affiliation. ONM-ABO describes this as a "cold-blooded killing of an unarmed elder." Separately, on June 4, PP forces reportedly stole livestock from local farmers in Qilxuu Kaarraa District. This theft is seen as part of a broader pattern of intimidation and collective punishment directed at Oromo communities suspected of OLA sympathies. In another incident, ONM-ABO reports that a young Oromo man, Abdullaahii Muusaa, was executed on June 3, after two months in detention. His arrest and subsequent execution are said to be solely based on his Oromo identity. ONM-ABO states that these actions amount to war crimes under international law, accusing Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government of allowing them to continue with impunity. There is a growing sense of fear in rural West Wallagga, with increased deployment of federal and regional forces under the pretext of counter-insurgency. Access to the area remains limited, raising international concerns over lack of accountability and transparency. Despite the severity of these allegations, no statements have been issued by the Prosperity Party or local authorities to date. Human rights defenders and civil society organisations continue to call for independent investigations into these incidents, as local communities warn of arbitrary arrests and killings becoming routine.
