Reports from our local sources in the Oromia have shed light on a series of violent incidents and political developments occurring in June 2025. On June 12th, in the village of Shuqursu Finiyan Sulli, part of the Hartma Furse administration in the Wallo district, northern Oromia, heavily armed Amhara militias known as "Fano" reportedly opened fire on civilians. This attack resulted in the injury of Mrs. Hawa Aliche, a mother of one, who was shot within her home. She was subsequently transported to the Kamimse hospital for intensive treatment. The Fano militias have reportedly intensified their random attacks in this region, particularly in the Shuqursu village, where they daily fire upon civilians, kill and injure people, and loot their livestock. Those who flee from the massacres are pursued and shot. These attacks follow a series of violent incidents that took place on the 9th and 10th of June, where the same militias reportedly killed and injured a significant number of residents, including Mrs. Aliche’s husband, Mr. Nur Ahmed Ali, and looted their livestock. In a controversial move, the head of the Prosperity Party in Shuqursu village, known as Hussein Hassan, in collaboration with the commander Yayyo Robsi, reportedly reprimanded the citizens who tried to defend their area, indirectly encouraging them to surrender and not resist the Fano militias. This has led to a general sense of frustration and profound sadness amongst the residents.
In another development, on June 13th, in the village of Goruba Gololcha, part of the Buli Hora administration in the West Guji zone in South Oromia, a member of the Ethiopian Imperial Army defected to the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA). The defector, whose identity remains undisclosed, handed over his AKM rifle and multiple ammunition to the OLA and joined their ranks peacefully. This defector, expressing his joy at the warm welcome he received from the OLA, sought forgiveness from his people for having borne arms against them unknowingly. He also called on other Oromos still serving under the Prosperity Party to cease firing upon their people and join the OLA while time still permits. Meanwhile, on June 14th, in the West Wallaga zone, in the Begi and Horo Guduru administrations, the Western OLA reportedly launched a successful attack against Prosperity Party forces stationed in the areas. The attack resulted in the death of two government soldiers and the seizure of three machine guns. On the same day, in the Horo Guduru region, in the Horo district, the OLA reportedly launched another attack, resulting in the death of one government soldier and the seizure of multiple weapons and military equipment. The escalating violence and political defections in the Oromia region underscore the ongoing tension and instability in the region, with the Oromo people caught in the midst of the conflict.
